Create a position paper related to the topic of charter schools and how they are funded, for example using research that states their funding comes from public monies (such as state taxes) that could be going to students attending public schools. I am against the general concept of charter schools versus public schools. I believe, however, that parents have a right to choose where their child attends and what type of education they receive as long as it is not altering the availability of education for other students. My issue is with the umbrella company in which charter schools are managed. These companies, such as the largest company named Academica, based out of the United States in Florida, ultimately are for profit organizations that charge management fees which come out of funds that could be going to our students in charter or regular public schools (these specifics require research and citations from peer reviewed articles). The topic can expand from these ideas.
The general topic comes from my own personal beliefs and experiences. However, if this topic does not present relatable and appropriate research in order to support the position, you may choose your own topic that fulfills the requirements of this paper and use your own belief system to drive the research.
Detailed instructions and expectations of the paper:
The introduction section requires a central thesis with a declarative statement of need. In this opening section the historical context of the concept with assertions from the past peer reviewed research to the present theoretical construct. Historical assumptions should help to establish the philosophical curricular position. Historical assumptions will help to drive the position that charter schools are ultimately stripping public schools from appropriate funding to assist with our general right in the United States to be guaranteed a free and public education.
Next, discuss the conceptual position and it’s evolution within both the peer-reviewed literature and how it operates in schools in practice or service. Establish pertinent relationships.
Example: if one takes the position that high-stakes testing is politically motivated those in power can control and determine what knowledge is of most worth by attaching such knowledge to the test and their outcomes, with student scores, teacher evaluations, school grades, etc.).
Relationships would then be discussed between the elements of the test (as they apply & are relevant to the position) citing examples of legislation (NCLB) sweeping changes (common core) and detailing nuances where applicable.
Finally, clearly articulate a position related to your own informed belief system, meaning my position that charter schools are not currently effective based on their funding practices must have research backing that statement up. Be sure to include the literature to support your point, arguments, and perspectives. This assignment should address curricular design and it’s effectiveness with a thorough grounding in socio-political contexts.
