    Midterm Paper
Answer ONE of the following questions in roughly five pages of your own original
writing. Your answer must engage meaningfully with at least THREE readings from the
course syllabus (with appropriate citations to the authors work). I will not give credit
for essays based on outside readings. It is fine to cite an outside source if you are
using a real-life example to make your argument, but your essay must be based
primarily on readings from the course syllabus. Please remember to include a Works
Cited page and follow the usual conventions for citations and academic honesty.

Option #1: To what extent is the current world order liberal? You will need to
explain what liberalism means in the context of international relations and justify your
answer with examples of liberalism, or a lack of liberalism, in today’s world order.
Option #2: Do norms and laws matter in international relations today, or is
international politics still based primarily on power? You will need to cite authors
who argue that norms and laws matter and contrast them with authors arguing that
power matters. You will also need to take a position on who is right and why.

Everything you submit for this class must be your own original work. You cannot
submit anyone elses work, have anyone submit work for you, or submit work for this
class that you are also submitting for another class. (This is known as self plagiarism
and it will earn you a zero on the assignment.) You must cite authors appropriately
when referencing their ideas. For example:
Bacevich    (2002: 102) argues    that    Globalization    is not social work.
You should also include a Works Cited pages at the end of your essay. For    instance:
Bacevich, Andrew J. American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S.
Diplomacy. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University    Press, 2002.
